What an unbelievable day.
So… let me start by saying I ride the train to commute to work. It’s about an hour each way and the Philly subway system is no treat.
Today I was on the very crowded Eastbound Market Frankford Line heading home when a VERY obnoxious homeless man started begging for food and money in my car. He was shouting “I don’t just need money, I need food, I need to eat too, I am just like everyone else.” Blah blah blah. Now, after I got out of work today, I stopped at Whole Foods to grab some things for a friend and decided to splurge and get a nice bag of organic kettle chips, considering I rarely have enough money to buy things of this nature, this was a special treat. But as I listened to this man talking about how he was hungry and needed to eat, I told myself that no matter how annoying he was, no one deserves to go hungry, so I pulled the chips out of my tote and held them out to him. What happened next, is just unreal. He looked at these chips, these nice, expensive, organic chips and goes “Oh, chips? You try sleeping out in the hot sun for hours and see how dehydrated you get! I can’t eat chips, I am just going to get more thirsty, I need something different, what else do you have?” I just sat there, staring at him with my mouth hanging open, unable to believe what was happening. All of the other people within ear shot on the train came to my defense, calling him names and such. Now, some of the things these people said were really harsh, and I don’t necessarily think they were right, but SERIOUSLY? It seems like if you are hungry enough to beg for food on the train, you would take whatever you could get!  Apparently not, apparently a $3 bag of organic chips isn’t good enough for a starving bum.
I hate Philly.
Ri-dic-ulous.
